Introduction to AM Radio Receiver
A receiver that receives amplitude modulated radio signals is termed amplitude modulated (AM) radio receiver.
Figure: block diagram of AM radio receiver
It consists of the following stages.
1. RF Amplifier
2. Converter
3. IF amplifier
4. Delector, AVC
5. Audio Amplifier
6. Power Supply
RF AMPLIFIER
It contains an aerial. The aerial accepts the electromagnetic waves and convert them into RF electrical signals. This stage amplifier the RF signals acquired from the aerial. The output signal of it is coupled with converter stage.
CONVERTER
It is also termed as frequency changer or first detector. It contains mixer and local oscillator stages. The local oscillator generates unmodulated radio frequency signals. The mixer stage merges the oscillator signal and RF signal. In this stage's output intermediate frequency (IF) is chosen. The value of IF signal is equivalent to the dissimilar of oscillator and signal frequencies (IF=Fo-Fs).
IF AMPLIFIER
It amplifiers the strength of IF signals to enhance the sensitivity. IF amplifier, is a transformer coupled amplifier. The input of it has tuned circuit. IF transformers (IFT) are employed in it. It uses one or two turned intermediate frequency amplifiers.
DETECTOR
It is also termed as detector or demodulator. In this stage the Signal diodes are employed. It filters the carrier signal and separates the audio signal create the IF signal. AF signal to the audio stage.
AVC
It is an automatic volume control. It manages the volume of the receiver automatically.
AUDIO AMPLIFIERS
This stage contains voltage and power amplifiers. The voltage amplifier working like pre-amplifier and amplifier working like output amplifier. This stage amplifiers the audio signals' voltage and power. Therefore the fidelity is enhanced through this stage. Push-pull amplifier is employed like output amplifier.
The audio signals are converted by the loud speaker into sound.
POWER SUPPLY
Power supply is the 1st stage in the receiver. It acts like a tuned radio frequency amplifier. Thus it is intended as transformer coupled amplifier.
