Introduction to Details of Winding:
A wire's length lying in the magnetic field and where an emf is induced is termed as a coil.
Every coil has inactive and active sides. A coil can usually comprise any number of turns. A single turn or coil comprise two active sides, or else termed as conductors. Likewise, a two turn coil comprises 4 conductors and a three turn coil has 6 conductors.
Usually, the total number of conductors each coils
Equation 1 - ZC = 2T
And, the total number of conductors for a specific machine
Equation 2 - Z = ZcC
Where ZC stands for = total number of conductors per coil
C stands for = number of coils
Z stands for = total number of conductors
T stands for = number of turns per coil
The (b) of the above diagram presents multi turn coil.
Active side of a coil:
It is the part of a coil that lies in the slots within a magnetic pole and emf is induced only in this part. In the above diagram (a) coil sides AB and CD are termed as active sides. For a double layer winding, one half portion of the coil drawn by solid line represents to the coil side lying on a slot's top, and the dotted line represents to the coil side lying in the bottom layer of other slot. This type of presentation is employed for double layer winding. For a single layer winding, the complete coil is presented through a solid line.
Inactive side of a coil:
It is a part of coil that contains two portions that are the front end side and the back end side. In the above diagram (a) the portion of the conductor that joins the two active sides and placed around the core, is termed the back end side of the coil. The portions that are employed to connect other coils are termed as front end side. These ends comprise two leads that are termed as starting end S and finishing end F of a coil. In the above diagram (a) AD and BC presents the inactive sides of a coil.
