Introduction to Tracking

Local Oscillator should generate an oscillator frequency that should be equivalent to the sum of RF and IF (Fo = Fs + IF). It is known as tracking.

If the, oscillator don't track correctly (Improper tracking), not matched IF would be generated and fed to the IF amplifier. It is termed as tracking error. The result, radio stations would be received in incorrect locations in the dial. To prevent this, a method that is termed as three point tracking, is employed.

THREE POINT TRACKING

In three point tracking method, padder capacitor is employed in series and trimmer in parallel with the Ganged capacitors and they have to be rightly aligned. If it is performed, Oscillator will correctly track the RF signal in Mid, Minimum, and Maximum of AM broadcast frequency range. Therefore, Radio stations may be received at their right locations in the dial.
