Introduction to AVC (Automatic Volume Control)
An automatic Volume control is used in radio receiver additionally to the manual volume control. It gives stability to the output.
FADING
Differences in the signal strength are termed as fading in radio reception. The signal that received through the antenna changes continuously. Since the signals arrives at the receiving aerial from the transmitting antenna by ionosphere. Because the density of ionosphere alters continuously, the signal voltage also changes continuously. Therefore, an instable output sound would be generated in the receiver. An automatic volume control (AVC) is used to remove the fading.
AVC circuit is categorised into two types as expressed below:
1. Simple AVC Circuit
2. Delayed AVC Circuit
SIMPLE AVC CIRCUIT
The automatic volume control that stay exists in every time is called simple A.V.C. Its standard is relies on changing the bias that is applied to RF and IF stages. The AVC bias changes as per to the signal strength. The bias is much more at high signal strengths and less at low signal strength.
WORKING
The AVC network is involved in the detector circuit. A resistor and a bypass capacitor are employed in this network. As per to the polarity of detector diode the bias is built. Because diode is opposite biased, negative bias is built and stored within the AVC bypass capacitor.
The voltage of AVC bias is applied to the bases of RF and IF transistor. This bias relies on the signal strength . While the signal strength is usual. AGC bias voltage is also general and the result, the sound in the speaker is as well general.
While high signal strength is acquired, much more bias (negative) is built that reduces the gain of RF and IF stages. In opposition, while low signal strength is acquired, lessbiasis developed that raise the gain of RF and IF stages. As the result, in stable output sound from the speaker despite of changing signal voltage.
DEMERITS
1. It slowly decreases the gain of RFand IF stages
2. From weak radio stations the audio cannot be heard clearly
AUDIO AMPLIFIER
The Amplifier that amplifies the frequency that range of 20 Hz to 20 Kilohertz is termed AF amplifier. Usually audio amplifier is split as power and voltage amplifiers.
