Errors of refraction

Errors of refraction:

In a usual eye focused for far-away objects, parallel rays of light come to a sharp focus accurately on the retina. It can accommodate for clear vision of objects from infinity (far point) downward to 25 cm (i.e., near point). This ideal refractive state is termed as emmetropia. A deviation from emmetropia is termed as ametropia. The significant forms of ametropia are astigmatism, myopia, hypermyopia, presbiopia. Ametropia outcomes from an imbalance among the length of the eye ball and its refractive power.

(a) Myopia (i.e., Short Sightedness)

Myopia outcomes when the lens curvature is too great or the whole eyeball becomes stretched out. Light rays incoming the eye are refracted more than is essential.

(b). Hypermetropia (i.e., Long Sightedness)

Hypermetropia outcomes whenever the curvature of the eye lens is not great sufficient. Light rays are not refracted sufficient and would therefore be focused behind the retina.

(c). Astigmatism:

Astigmatism takes place if either the cornea or lens is distorted. One portion of the focusing mechanism then refracts light rays too much, or too less.

(d). Presbiopia:

This is the outcome of a reduction in the amplitude of accommodation with age due to hardening and loss of plasticity of the lens. Therefore it becomes less able of being moulded into a more complicated form. Presbiopia starts at around 40 years of age. The remedy is convex lenses for reading. Any defect in the eye must be consulted instantly with the optometrist.
