Functional System Components

Introduction to Functional System Components

A system should be designed in terms of functional subsystem without regard to whether these are hardware or software subsystem, as in table 1.11.

In the previous example, number of different components types.

1. Sensor Components: gathers information from the system environment.

2. Actuator Components: cause some change in the system environment.

3. Computation components:  when given some inputs, perform some computation and produce some output.

4. Coordination components: whose function is to coordinate the operation of other components?

5. Communication Components: whose function is to allow other system components to interact with each other?

6. Interface Components transform:  the representation used by one system component into the representation used by another components.

As such there is no hard and fast division between the various components types. Software will be used to control the overall system. These components classifications are helpful when designing a system.

Specification of the system Architecture

Subsystem and the information flow between the components can be specified in a document.

The architecture diagrams specification (ADS) is prepared, which includes.

1. Information related to all the subsystems and information flow between these subsystems.

2. A system module narrative description for each of the subsystem. It describes input, process and output of each subsystem.

3. AN architecture Dictionary which  is a list of each  information  item  shown  in  the AFD and a description  of it. The architecture of the architecture dictionary contains:

Information item name

Information item description

Type (data or control)

Origin (subsystem or external entity)

Destination (subsystem or external entity)

Communication pathway (name)

The architecture dictionary is a system level version of the requirement dictionary.

4. The architecture interconnect diagram (AID) and the corresponding interconnect description. The AID and the corresponding specification describe how the information is transferred from one subsystem to another one I .e .medium.

To develop the AID the system analyst must make implementation decisions that are left for design.
