Atherosclerosis:
Atherosclerosis is narrowing of arteries caused by the plaques on their internal linings. Such plaques are composed mostly of fats deposited from the blood stream. They disturb the normal flow of blood via the affected artery. Atherosclerosis supports thrombus and embolus (i.e., fragment of blood clot). Men are exaggerated earlier than women since women are protected by natural oestrogen hormones.
Causes:
Narrowing of the vessel is due to the growth of raised patches termed as plaques. Such plaques consist of athroma (i.e., fat and oil mixture), fibrous tissue, decaying muscle cells, and clumps of blood platelets, cholesterol and calcium (i.e., abnormal blood clot).
Risk factors:
Hypertension, Cigarette smoking, physical inactivity, male gender, obesity, diabetes mellitus, heredity, aggressive personality. Harsh effects of atherosclerosis is stroke (i.e., loss of blood supply to brain), heart attack (i.e., loss of blood supply to heart).
