Introduction to Redox Reactions
Redox reactions or reduction-oxidation including all chemical reactions wherein atoms have their oxidation state changed. It can be either a simple redox process like the oxidation of carbon to yield carbon dioxide (CO2) or the reduction of carbon by hydrogen to yield methane (CH4) or complex process like the oxidation of glucose (C6H12O6) in the human body via a series of complex electron transfer processes.
Basically, redox reactions are a family of reactions that are connected with the electrons' transfer between species. The word comes from two concepts of oxidation and reduction. It can be described in simple terms:
Gain of electrons is known as Reduction or a decrease in oxidation state through a molecule, atom, or ion.
Oxidation is loss of electrons, or an increase in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion.
Although oxidation reactions are usually related with the formation of oxides from oxygen molecules, these are just the particular examples of general concept of reactions that involves electron transfer.
Oxidation-reduction reactions or Redox reactions have several similarities to acid-base reactions. Such as acid-base reactions, redox reactions are a matched set, i.e., without a reduction reaction there cannot be an oxidation reaction happening concurrently. The reduction alone and oxidation alone are each called a half-reaction because two half-reactions all the time occur together to form a whole reaction. When writing half-reactions the lost or gained electrons are usually included explicitly in turn that the half-reaction be balanced with respect to electric charge.
