In vitro fertilization (Test tube babies):

The so called test tube babies are formed by the method of in vitro fertilization. (In vitro = exterior the body, as against in vivo = within the body). This method is being increasingly utilized in couples who are not able to attain fertilization in the normal method.

Gonadotropins are managed to the woman to stimulate growth of follicles in the ovary. Just before ovulation, the ovum is eliminated (employing an aspirator) and is located in an appropriate medium. Spermatozoa are added to the medium. Fertilization and before time development of the embryo occurs in this medium.

The procedure is carefully monitored. Whenever the embryo is at the 8-celled stage, it is place inside the uterine endometrium. Successful implantation occurs in around 20 percent of such trials. It is a newer technique in which the fertilized ova are initiated into the fallopian tube from where they naturally pass to the uterus for implantation. This technique is considered to have a higher success rate than IVF. An even newer method is the introduction of a single sperm into the ovum by microinjection.
