The plant’s growth is regulated by gene action and environmental conditions. There are substances that are generated by plants themselves that regulate their growth and several physiological and biochemical activities. These are known as plant growth substances. Regulation of plant growth by chemical mechanisms often involves fixed molecules termed as hormones.
Based upon the basis and biological activities plant growth substances are categorized into three. That is:

2. Phytohormones and
3. Growth inhibitors.

Growth regulator:

It is a hormone such as synthetic organic compound. In small amounts, it changes the growth and development either through promoting or inhibiting the growth.  For example- Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA).


Growth inhibitors

A number of organic substances generated in the plant inhibit the plant growth. These substances are known as growth inhibitors. They slow down the elongation in roots, stems and leaves. For instance, ethylene is a potent inhibitor of bud growth. Abscisic acid slows down lateral bud growth in tomato.
