Introduction to Enamelled Wire:
A wire coated with an extremely thin insulating layer is termed as enamelled wire. The core material ('wire') is copper or aluminum, coated by a thin layer of a polyurethane, polyamide, or polyester resin - termed as "enamel".
The insulation's thin layer coated on Enamelled wire avoids the wire surfaces from being in a short circuit while wound into coils. It is employed chiefly in the construction of electromagnets, motors, transformers and inductors. For effortlessness of manufacturing inductive components such as transformers and inductors, mainly new enamelled wire has enamel that works like a flux while burnt during soldering. The meaning of this is that the electrical connections at the ends can be ready without stripping off the insulation first. Older enamelled copper wires generally needs sandpapering or scraping to remove the insulation before soldering.
Enamelled wires are categorized through their diameter (as SWG number) or area, temperature class and insulation class. Enamelled wires are manufactured in both rectangular shapes and round shapes. Rectangular wire is employed in larger machine windings to make the very efficient use of presented winding space.
Breakdown voltage relies on the thickness of the covering that can be of 3 types: Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3. Higher grades comprise thicker insulation and so higher breakdown voltages. The temperature class points out the temperature of the wire on which it can comprise a 20,000 hour service life. At lesser temperatures the wire's service life is longer (about a factor 2 for each 10 °C lower temperature). General temperature classes are 120, 155 and 180 °C.
