The brain:

There consist more than a thousand million neurons in adult human brain. The estimate shows that the cerebral cortex alone has around 102783000 synapses. Therefore the brain is a complicated organ.

On functional and structural basis the brain can be categorized into 3 regions. They are

(1). Fore brain,
(2). Midbrain,
(3). Hind brain.

Fore Brain (Prosencephalon):-

This area of the brain includes Diencephalon and the cerebrum. The diencephalon is created of thalamus and hypothalamus.

The midbrain or Mesencephalon:-

The roof of this area has four nuclei. The nuclei form mounds. They are together termed as corpora quadrigemina. It is formed of two superior colliculi or mounds and 2 inferior colliculi or mounds. The superior colliculi are included in visual reflexes. They manage eye and head movements. They help in visual tracking of moving objects. The inferior colliculi are included in hearing.

The hindbrain or Rhombencephalon :-

This portion of the brain includes Cerebellum, Pons and Medulla oblongata.
