Pons:-

This area relays information from cerebrum to the cerebellum. It also has sleep center and respiratory centers. Such centers all along with medulla help to control respiratory movements.

Medulla oblongata:-

It is the main inferior portion of the brain stem. It acts as conduction pathway for both ascending and descending nerve tracts. The nuclei within medulla oblongata function as centers of numerous reflexes included in the regulation of heart rate, breathing, blood vessel contractions, vomiting, swallowing, coughing and sneezing.
