The Unified Approach

Introduction to Unified Approach

All the approach  describe above were widely use. But the general feeling was that teach  approach  lacked something and couldn't  be used  universal approach to all  problems of software design. Thus to solve this  problem a unified approach evolved from the combined efforts booch, rumbaugh and Jacobson. This  unified approach is known as UML.

UML is organized into  two major  design  activities  system design  and objects  design but before describing  these  approaches  the  important concepts  of UML will be  discussed. Let  us elucidate unified modelling language  UML.

Modelling is simplification of reality, its is a central  part of all  activities that leads to the deployment of good software. We build models to communicate  the  desired structure and behaviour of the system. In short  building  models help in:

  • Visualization and control of system architecture.
  • Exposure of opportunities for simplification and reuse.
  • Managing risk.
  • Communication for the desired structure and behaviour of the system.

So modelling  is very  important  to be  done. In the  concern of complexity of a program the modelling  plays  an important  and effective role to reduce it. As  we know that  when  the levels of abstraction  increases there  are more chances  of failure and it will be very  difficult  to solve  the problem.

The unified modelling  language UML is a standard is a standard language for  writing  software  blueprints. UML  may be  used to  visualize specify  construct and  document the  artefacts of a software intensive  system.

Conceptual Model of UML

UML require  three major elements  to build its  conceptual model. It includes:

  • UML basic building blocks.
  • Rules that dictate how those building blocks may be put together and
  • Some common mechanisms that apply throughout UML.

One more  term required to build UML model is view. A view simply a subset of UML modelling  construct, that  represents one aspect  of the system. One or two kinds of diagrams provide a visual  notation for  the concepts in each view.

UML can be used  for  domains like:

  • Enterprise information systems
  • Banking and financial services
  • Telecommunications
  • Transportation Management
  • Defence / Aerospace and Navigation
  • Scientific and Engineering Applications
