However in Eukaryotes, the genes on the DNA strand contain coding regions termed as exons interrupted by non-coding DNA segments that do not take genetic information termed as introns. This led to the notion of interrupted genes or discontinuous genes. These genes while generating m-RNA will first form a primary transcript that will then cut off the introns to form the functional m-RNA and this is termed as splicing.
