Nitrogen molecule

Nitrogen molecule (N2):

The electronic configuration of nitrogen (i.e., Z=7) in ground state is, 1S2 2S2 2P1X 2P1Y 2P1Z. Thus, the total number of electrons present in nitrogen molecule (N2) is 14. Such 14 electrons can be accommodated in different molecular orbitals in order of rising energy.

Here (σ1s)2 (σ*1s)2  part of the configuration is abbreviate as KK, which symbolizes the K shells of the two atoms. In computing bond order, we can ignore KK, as it comprises two bonding and two anti-bonding electrons.

The molecular orbital energy level diagram of N2 is illustrated in figure shown below:

The bond order of N2 can be computed as follows:

Here, Nb = 8 and Na = 2

∴ Bond order = (Nb - Na)/ 2= (8-2)/2 = 3.

i) Nature of bond:

A bond order of 3 means that a triple bond is existed in a molecule of nitrogen.

ii) Diamagnetic nature:

As all electrons in nitrogen are paired, hence it is diamagnetic in nature.
