Ionisation potential

Ionisation potential:

Ionisation energy of an element is stated as the quantity of energy needed to eradicate most loosely bound electron from the isolated neutral gaseous atom in its lowest energy state. The process is symbolized as:

Ionisation energy is measured in electron volts per atom (i.e., eV/atom), kilo calories per mole (i.e., kcal/mole) or kilo joules per mole (i.e., kJ/mole).

Successive ionisation potentials:

In addition to initial ionisation potential (I1) stated above, second, third and so on ionisation potentials are also acknowledged. Second ionisation potential (I2) is the energy needed to eliminate one more electron from the gaseous cation, M+(g) to obtain the doubly positively charged gaseous cation, M2+(g), that is,

Likewise, third ionisation potential (I3) is the energy needed to eliminate still one more electron from M2+ cation to obtain M3+ cation, that is,

Likewise ionisation potentials of higher and higher grades are also recognized. Each successive ionization potential or energy is bigger than the previous one, as the electron should be eliminated against the total positive charge on the ion.
