Introduction to GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)

GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is a mobile data service presented to users of GSM mobile phones. GPRS is frequently defined as "2.5G", i.e., a technology among the second generations (2G) and third generations (3G) of mobile telephony. It gives moderate speed data transfer, through using not used TDMA channels in the GSM network. This profile is suitable for applications in which data is mostly downloaded, like web browsing. If the user reads more e-mail than he/she sends, this is also a suitable profile.

GPRS class 10 is also termed as 4+2. The meaning of this is that 4 slots are allotted to downloading and 2 slots to uploading, but no above 5 slots might be employed at similar time. This profile is suitable for applications in which data is sent back.

Each slot can arrive at a maximum of 14.4 kilobit per second.
