This is the procedure of transfer of pollen grains from anthers to the stigma of either the same flower or the other flower borne on similar plant. Accordingly, self pollination is of two kinds: autogamy and geitonogamy.

(A) Autogamy: (Gk. Auto = self and gamos = marriage):

It is a type of pollination in which the pollen from the anthers of a flower is transferred to the stigma of similar flower. It takes place by three techniques.

  • Homogamy
  • Bud Pollination


(B) Geitonogamy (Gk, geiton = neighbor and gamos = marriage):

It is a type of pollination in which the pollen grains from anthers of one flower are transferred to the stigma of the other flower borne on similar plant. It generally takes place in plants that exhibit monoecious situation (that is, unisexual, male and female flowers are borne on similar plant).
