The two sorts of nucleic acids are differentiated basically on the basis of the 5 carbon sugar pentose that they possess. One possesses D-2-deoxyribose, (deoxyribonucleic acid) when the other consist D-ribose (therefore called ribonucleic acid). Both these sugars in nucleic acids are available in the furanose form and are of β configuration.
