Trypanosoma cruzi:

Trypanosoma cruzi causes American trypanosomiasis or else termed as Chagas’ disease that is a zoonosis. Patients can exist with either acute or chronic disease. A huge number of patients with positive serologic tests can stay asymptomatic.

Morphology:

The trypomastigote is spindle-shaped, around 20 µm long and characteristically supposes a C or U shape in stained blood film. Trypomastigotes take place in the blood in two forms, a long slender form and short stubby one. The nucleus is located in the center of the body, and a large, oval kinetoplast is situated at the posterior end. A flagellum occurs from the basal body and extends all along the outer edge of undulating membrane until it arrives at the anterior end of the body, where it projects as a free flagellum. Whenever the trypomastigotes are stained with Giemsa stain, the cytoplasm stains blue and nucleus, kinetoplast and flagellum stain violet or red.

The amastigote, 2-6 µm in diameter, is indistinguishable from those found in leishmanial infections. It has a large nucleus and rod-shaped kinetoplast which stain red or violet with Giemsa stain and the cytoplasm stains blue.
