There are two categories under this, namely, umbel and compound umbel.
Umbel:
The main axis might be simple or branched. However the vertical growth of the axis is rapidly stopped and a whorl of bracts occur at the tip of the inflorescence. This is termed as involucre of bracts from the axils of which occur flowers containing pedicels of equivalent length. The flowers are in acropetal order and present at the similar level. Example: Allium cepa (Onion).
Compound Umbel:
The major axis of the umbel inflorescence generates an involucre of bracts that give mount to branches termed as rays from their axils. Each and every ray generates an involucel of bracts at its tip from the axils of which occur flowers containing pedicels of equivalent length in acropetal order. Each of such umbel is termed as umbellet. Example: Daucas carota (i.e., carrot)
