Sleep:

Sleep is stated as a state of unconsciousness from which a person can be awakened by suitable sensory or other stimuli.

Types of sleep:-

During each night a person goes through two phases of sleep which alternate with one other. They are

(1) Slow wave sleep and
(2) REM sleep.

Slow wave sleep:-

In this kind of sleep the brain waves are extremely slow. However this sleep is often termed as “dreamless sleep”, dreams actually take place very frequently and even nightmares take place during this sleep. During this sleep the procedure of consolidation of the dreams in memory does not take place. This sleep is highly helpful in reducing blood pressure, respiratory rate and basal metabolic rate.

REM sleep or Rapid eye movement sleep: -

In a common night sleep, REM sleep lasting 5-30 minutes usually appear on an average of every 90 minutes. It is usually linked with active dreaming. The muscle tone all through the body is exceedingly depressed through this sleep indicating strong inhibition of the spinal projections from the reticular development of the brain stem.

The heart rate and respiration generally become unequal that is characteristic of the dream state. Throughout REM sleep, the brain is fairly active. Though, the brain activity is not channeled in the appropriate direction for persons to be conscious of their surroundings and thus to be awake.
