What were conditions which led to or allowed this to occur

Problem

The 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles were a milestone for the games, and the Olympic movement, from a commercialization perspective. What occurred in 1984 set the stage for massive shifts in not only the future of the Olympics but sports marketing in general.

1) From a sports/commercialization perspective, what occurred in the 1984 games that was so transformational? This can be extended to not just be the impacts directly to the 1984 games in particular, but also to the wider sports marketing landscape.

2) What were the conditions which led to, or allowed this to occur? (what were the conditions/context in sports/global events, etc,) which directly contributed to the commercialization of the 1984 Summer Olympic Games?

3) Organizationally, the conditions were different for LA 84 than previous games (or future games for that matter), what was 'different or unique' about these conditions, or the setting for/leading up to the 1984 Games?

4) Select and focus on 1 or 2 outcomes from those games, (even examples in the Olympic movement, or sports marketing overall) from a commercialization perspective, and defend why you believe those were the most transformational for the Olympics and sports.
