Problem:
A concern I have about ethics in counseling and human services is confidentiality. It is the first thing that really stands out to me. Clients share things they probably have never said out loud before, and they trust us to protect that information. That's a big responsibility. What concerns me is how much harder this has become with social media being such a big part of everyday life. Social media blurs boundaries in ways that weren't an issue years ago. Something as small as a client trying to follow you or even seeing a client's post pop up online can create an ethical dilemma. Accepting a friend request or liking a post might seem harmless but it can break confidentiality or change the relationship in a way that isn't healthy for the client.
I also think about how we present ourselves online. What we post, comment on, or share can affect how clients see us. Even if we think our social media is "personal," it can still affect our professional role. We have to be mindful that clients may look us up, and what they find could influence how safe they feel opening up. Another concern is accidentally sharing too much about our work. Even vague posts about having a "hard day with clients" can cross a line. It's easy to slip even if you don't mean to which is why we have to be extra careful. Protecting our client's privacy isn't only a part of ethics its part of creating a safe space where they feel respected and supported.
