Condense: Mental health disparities in the U.S. stem from deep-rooted social and structural inequities. Individuals affected by adverse social determinants-such as housing instability, poverty, and food insecurity-face a significantly higher risk of mental health issues, including depression and anxiety (Alegría et al., 2024). Many healthcare organizations, however, lack standardized screening protocols for social determinants of mental health (SDMH), and referral pathways to community resources are often fragmented. Barriers such as limited reimbursement for screening and insufficient integration of behavioral health services hinder effective responses. The ecological model situates SDMH within the interplay among social environments, community conditions, and institutional policies, highlighting how structural factors such as unaffordable housing and unemployment affect mental health outcomes (Tanarsuwongkul et al., 2025).
