Problem: Hello, I answered some of the questions, if you can think of anything else to add to my answers to give me an idea and to help me with the other questions I would appreciate it.
Describe the Implicit Association Test (IAT) you took, including which bias it aimed to measure. I took the IAT on age, which measured my bias against older people.
Summarize your results and your initial reaction to them. Were you surprised, uncomfortable, or affirmed by the results? Why or why not?
The results of my test were that I have a slightly better response towards younger people than I do older people. I was surprised and uncomfortable to realize I was slightly biased against older people. I am so afraid of being discriminated against because of my age of 66 that it never occurred to me to believe that I could also be biased against older people. The results show that I have a strong automatic response in favor of younger people (30%). I made many errors when the button associated with old people and good came into play more than when old people and bad were a relevant factor.
Reflect on what the results of the test reveal about your own implicit biases. Consider how these biases might have developed (e.g., societal influences, personal experiences, media exposure).
I believe that society and the media play a big role in how age is perceived. Being youthful is equated with beauty in our society, and the media highlights youth in commercials and television shows. Being perceived as young in our society is a billion-dollar business. We are bombarded daily with messages about how to stay and look young. These messages infer that growing older is a bad thing and we need to fight the reality of aging. Unfortunately, ageism is a reality in our culture which could lead to many negative consequences such as not being hired as we grow older.
Critically analyze how implicit biases could potentially impact your interactions with clients, colleagues, and the broader community in your future work. Consider situations where unconscious biases could affect your decision-making, judgment, or behavior.
Reflect on how this test has impacted your understanding of implicit bias and how it relates to social work values such as empathy, social justice, and cultural competence.
Discuss how recognizing and addressing your implicit biases will inform your leadership practice. What steps can you take to mitigate the effects of implicit bias in your work (e.g., ongoing self-reflection, seeking diverse perspectives, continuing education, policy changes)? Need Assignment Help?
