Many people will self-diagnose based on what they have seen on social media, researched online, or by word of mouth. Some people will say they are experiencing PTSD, when in reality they are just experiencing normal stress. The one diagnosis I have seen many people post on social media about is ADHD. With things such as feeling over stimulated, experiencing paralysis when there are too many things that need to get done, not finishing tasks, or having a hard time focusing. Sometimes certain symptoms can be a sign of something undiagnosed, but it is important to see a mental health professional before self-diagnosing. One or two symptoms, many times, does not meet DSM requirements for an official diagnosis. There are also many other things that a mental health professional may look for that the individual is not aware of to look for.
I personally grew up with a Hispanic household with a strict Christian worldview. (More religious than a relationship with Jesus) Mental health was not a thing that was observed. People prayed, fasted, read their bibles, and mental health symptoms typically were seen as a spiritual stronghold and also refused to take medication. "We do ourselves and others a disservice when we confine God's healing only to what looks miraculous. Sometimes the miracle is a diagnosis, a prescription, or a trained counselor showing up at just the right time. (Howard, 2025)" In other instances, people's faith helps them develop better coping skills. Meditation, prayer, journaling, going to church, reading the word can often help people remain grounded and understand that they can leave their stresses, burdens, and anxiety at the feet of Jesus. It all depends on the experience a person has had within a religious or spiritual setting.
It is very important for the social worker to understand the effects of faith on the client, so they know how to integrate it into a treatment plan or to avoid it overall. The treatment plan should always be client based, so if the client has any triggers or religious preferences, they should be taken into consideration. Need Assignment Help?
