Cooperative Learning Group Learning Structure:

  • Cooperative learning groups work and learn together. All group members know and understand information learned and presented within their group.
  • Cooperative learning groups share leadership. Thus, one group member does not have more power than another.
  • Individuals in cooperative learning groups do not work alone.
  • The purpose of this kind of group is to maintain cohesiveness as well as complete tasks; you are all in this together!

Assignment Steps:

1. Students will be assigned to groups of 5 or 6 from the class to complete their role play and group discussion.

2. Students will be assigned a random topic to explore.   Please note that all the topics have relevance for the course outcomes.

3. Review the reading assigned for your team's topic in the Reading Folder in Bb under Assignments.

4. In addition to your group's assigned reading on your topic, you will review a minimum of 4 relevant academic sources for the presentation (no Wikipedia, blogs). Submit to the instructor a reference list on the day of your presentation in APA format.

5. Your group will perform a live role play relevant to your topic, lasting 5 to 6 minutes. For instance, if you aim to demonstrate the impact of divorce on a child, your role play should specifically portray the interactions between parents or guardians and children.

6. All group members must have a role to play.

7. Submit a brief description of your presentation (one per team) to the drop box on Bb in the Assignment Folder one week before the scheduled presentation. In this description, explain how your research underpins the key issues your role play addresses and raises. Be critical in your analysis and aim for approximately 1 - 2 pages in length.

8. Discussion: You will present your work and initiate a discussion with the class. Highlight the salient aspects of the issues addressed and any other significant learning. Include significant findings from the literature that support or negate your position on the issues you are addressing. Please be critical (pros & cons).

9. Your discussion must take 17 - 20 minutes. Additional information is provided in the rubric or mark breakdown below. Be sure to review the rubric before your presentation.

10. Complete a knowledge check with the class. Include 4 questions on your topic (multiple choice, true or false, matching, discussion questions). The instructor may include some of your knowledge check questions in the final exam so hand them in to your instructor. The knowledge check is to be completed by students at the end of your discussion period.

11. Complete and submit the evaluation form to your instructor on the day of your presentation.
