How hawthorne effect takes its name from experiments

Problem: The Hawthorne Effect takes its name from experiments conducted in a Western Electric Manufacturing Plant in Hawthorne, Illinois by Elton Mayo in the 1920s and 1930s. According to the effect, individual and/or group behavior changes not from environmental or physical factors, but from being observed. In the Hawthorne plant experiments, changes were made to working conditions and working arrangements in an attempt to gauge or measure efficiency fluctuations. Worker behavior did change, but in unexpected ways and for unexpected reasons. These changes were attributed to observation. Thus, the observation impacted the experiment and, perhaps, placed the reliability and validity of the results in question. Research the Hawthorne plant experiment to learn about the observations and the effects of the observations on worker behavior. What could the observers have done differently to ameliorate the impacts of their presence or the changes they introduced? Could the experiment have been improved through more covert or unobtrusive techniques? Based on what you have learned in this course, how would you approach the experiment and the observations?
