Viral genetics:
The viral genome has all the genetic information either as DNA or RNA though never both. The fraction of nucleic acid in a virion differs from 1 % as in influenza virus to around 50%, as in certain phages. Smaller viruses such as para-viruses might have 3 to 4 genes whereas larger viruses like herpes and pox might have numerous hundred genes. Virions contain only a single copy of the nucleic acid. Therefore they are termed as haploid viruses. The only exception is the retroviruses that are said to be diploid as they have two matching single-stranded RNA genomes. The virions are termed as the infectious particles.
The structure of nucleic acid in the virion might be either linear or circular. The DNA of many animal viruses is in a linear molecule. In some plant viruses the genome is a circular RNA. Although the RNA in animal viruses exists only as linear twofold stranded or single stranded molecule.
