Contagious diseases:

The diseases that spread easily by different modes are termed as contagious diseases. Such diseases are of bacterial or viral origin. The bacterial diseases are anthrax, septicemia, haemorrhagic mastitis and tuberculosis. The viral diseases are cow pox, foot and mouth disease and rinderpest.

1. Anthrax:

Anthrax, a bacterial disease is caused due to β anthracis that causes sudden death in cattle.

Symptoms:

High temperature (41-41.50c), thorax, swelling of the neck, flanks and lumbar areas which are neither hot nor painful. Blood releases from natural openings, the affected animal dies in 10 to 36 hours.

Control:

Vaccination with spore vaccine at the age of 6 month and then yearly. Affected animals are to be separated, contaminated position to be disinfected and the carcasses to be buried deep.

2. Cow pox is a contagious viral disease attacking only cows and buffaloes:

Symptoms:

Swelling of udder and teats, retarded rumination, increase in temperature, eruptions on skin and udder and teats generating into vesicles, pustules and scabs by phases eventually leading to mastitis and loss of milk.

Prevention:

Segregation of affected animal, offering sloppy food for swallowing and digestion, fomenting udder with warm disinfectant solution, providing saline laxative and diuretics, treating lesions with mild antiseptic ointment. Cow shed must be kept clean.

3. External parasitic diseases:

Ordinary ectoparasites are ticks, flies, mites, fleas and lice. They are directly included by sucking the blood from cattle and become an irritant. They are also indirectly included in transmitting viral, bacterial, and protozoan diseases.

4. Internal parasitic diseases:

Tape worm, hook worm, round worm, and flukes are some of the intestinal parasites causing diarrahoea, dysentery and some other problems.
