AIDS (HIV) and its control:

The disease Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (i.e., AIDS) was recognized in the year 1981 (December). Early epidemiological studies have established that it is a communicable disease transmitted via sexual contact or via blood and blood products. In the year 1983 Luc Montagnier at Pasteur Institute, Paris and Gallo at National Institute of Health (i.e., NIH) USA isolated the virus which caused AIDS. In the year 1986, the committee on taxonomy of virus coined the term HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus to avoid confusion due to various names being specified by various researchers.

HIV is latest member of the Lentivirinae subfamily of human retroviruses. Retroviruses are RNA viruses that have the capability to transform their RNA into DNA with the help of an enzyme termed as reverse transcriptase.

Control and Management:

1. Screening of blood and blood products.

2. Teaching to people about do’s and don’ts in AIDS contraction and conveying more awareness among the public.

3. Education around protected sexual behavior and practices.

4. Participation of voluntary organizations, lecturers, NGOs, paramedical workers, numerous other voluntary health organizations, in AIDS awareness programs

5. Making the antiretroviral drugs like AZTs (i.e., Azidothymidine/Zidovudin) and saquinovir and so on, available to patients.

The management of HIV infection includes the above common measures, treatment of opportunistic infections and cancer, antiretroviral drugs, immune-modulators and helpful treatment and counselling.
