Symptoms of Staphylococci

Symptoms of Staphylococci:

Since Staphylococci can infect some site in the body, the symptoms depend on the position of the infection. The infection might be mild or life threatening. Usually, staphylococcal infections generate pus-filled pockets, like abscesses and boils (i.e., furuncles and carbuncles). Whenever Staphylococci infect the skin, abscesses emerge as warm, pus-filled pockets beneath the surface of the skin. They generally rupture like a large pimple and ooze pus onto the skin. Staphylococci can too cause cellulitis, a spreading infection beneath the skin. Two serious staphylococcal skin infections are toxic epidermal necrolysis and the scalded skin syndrome, both of which lead to large-scale peeling of skin.

Staphylococcal pneumonia is a harsh infection. People with chronic lung diseases like chronic bronchitis and emphysema and those with influenza are mainly at risk. Staphylococcal pneumonia frequently causes high fever and rigorous lung symptoms like rapid breathing, shortness of breath, and cough productive of sputum which might be tinged with blood. Staphylococcal pneumonia might cause lung abscesses and infection of the pleura and the membrane layers enclosing the lungs. Staphylococci can travel via blood and cause abscesses in internal organs, like bones (i.e., osteomyelitis) and the inner lining of the heart and its valves (i.e., endocarditis).

Staphylococcal bacteraemia frequently develops from a staphylococcal infection somewhere else in the body. It generally comes from an infected intravenous device, like a catheter, that provides staphylococci direct access to the blood stream. Staphylococcal bacteraemia is a general cause of death in rigorously burnt people. Usually, the bacteraemia causes a persistent high fever and at times shock.

Bone infections (i.e., osteomyelitis) affect those with deep skin ulcers such as bedsores. Bone infections cause fever, chills, and bone-pain. Redness and swelling come out over the infected bone, and fluid might build up in joints near the regions invaded by the bacteria. The site of infection might be painful, and the person generally has fever.

Surgery raises the risk of staphylococcal infection. The infection might generate abscesses at the stitches or might cause extensive destruction of the incision site. The postoperative staphylococcal infection might worsen and progress to toxic shock syndrome.
