  Staphylococcus Aureus

Staphylococcus Aureus:

Members of the genus Staphylococcus go to the family Micrococcaceae. They are Gram positive cocci which take place in grape-like clusters. The size differs from 0.5-1.5 µm in diameter. They are non-motile, non spore forming generally catalase positive and usually non-capsulated.

Staphylococci are broad spread in nature. They are mostly found on the living skin, skin glands and mucous membranes of mammals and birds. Usually they have symbiotic relationships with their host. Though they become a pathogen when introduced into the tissues via trauma, inoculation by needles or direct implantation of the foreign bodies.

At present the genus Staphylococcus have 35 species. Some species are found often as agents of human and animal infections. They are S.epidermidis, S.aureus, S.saprophyticus, S.haemolyticus and S.lugdunensis. The most significant species among them is coagulase positive S.aureus.
