Mycoplasma:

Nocard and Roux introduced mycoplasma 100 years back. Such organisms passed via bacteria stopping filter. It caused pleuropneumonia in cattle and was also termed as “Pleuropneumonia like organisms” (i.e., PPLO). They were also termed as Eton’s agents. They are pathogens of respiratory and urogenital tracts. In humans, Mycoplasma pneumoniae causes pneumonia. Ureaplasma urealyticum has been related with non-gonococcal urethritis in men. M. hominis caused post partum fever in women as well in uterine tube infections.

General Characteristics of Mycoplasma:

The smallest size is 125 to 250nm.They are extremely pleomorphic, lack stiff cell wall, bound by a triple layered unit membrane which has sterol. They are totally resistant topenicillins since they lack cell wall. However they are inhibited by tetracycline or erythromycin. They grow in cell free media. The centre of the colony is embedded below the surface providing a fried egg appearance. Growth is inhibited by particular antibody. They contain an affinity for mammalian cell membrane.
