Herpes Viruses:

The herpes viruses, a big family infecting most of the animal species, involving humans, share a number of features, such as structure, mode of replication, capacity to establish life-long latent infection and reactivation.

At current there are eight human herpes viruses have been known to be common in all populations. Studies with the eighth are expected.

Structure:

The Herpes virus is icosahedral, consists of 162 hallow hexagonal and pentagonal capsomeres. The core of double stranded DNA, in the form of a toroid is found in every herpes viruses and is bounded by the icosahedral capsid. The nucleocapsid is bounded by a lipid envelope derived from the infected cell’s nuclear membrane. Viral glycoprotein spikes measuring 8nm in length are existed on the surface of the envelope. An amorphous structure, having numerous proteins found between the envelope and capsid is designated the tegument. The enveloped virion measures 120 to 200 nm; and the naked virion, measures 100nm.
