General morphological structure:

They hold complex morphological structures. Flagella for locomotion, and nucleus for unique functions.

Nucleus:

It is a big round oval body located in the center of the body and termed as trophonucleus that is concerned with nutritive function. It stains red in Leishman stain.

Kinetoplast:

This is equal to the nucleus of other cells. This is round or rod shaped, and has two portions. The posterior portion is termed as parabasal body and anterior part is blepharoplast.

Flagellum:

Flagellum is a hair like structure initiating from blepharoplast. The part from blepharoplast to surface of the body is termed as axoneme. Axoneme projects from anterior end are as free as flagellum.

Undulating Membrane:

It is made by the flagellum whereas curving around the body and is thrown into numerous folds. According to the arrangement of such structures there are five dissimilar morphological types:

1. Leishmanial form or Amastigote forms
2. Leptomonad form or Promastigote form
3. Crithedial form or Epimastigote Form
4. Trypanosomal form or Trypomastigote or Opisthomastigote
5. Metacyclic Trypanosomes
