Physical properties:

1) It is the white lustrous metal.

2) It boils at 2485°C and melts at 1233°C.

3) Molten silver absorbs around twenty times its volume of oxygen that it again expels on cooling. Globules of molten silver are thrown off. This is termed as “spitting of silver”. This can be prevented by cover the molten metal with a layer of charcoal.

Chemical properties:

1) With dilute HNO3:

Dilute HNO3 reacts with silver releasing nitric oxide.

3Ag + 4HNO3 → 3AgNO3 + NO ↑ + 2H2O

2) With concentrated HNO3 or concentrated H2SO4:

Hot concentrated HNO3 or concentrated H2SO4 react with silver releasing NO2 and SO2 correspondingly.

Ag + 2 HNO3 → AgNO3 + NO2↑ + H2O
2Ag + 2H2SO4→Ag2SO4 + SO2↑ + 2H2O

3) Action with chlorine:

Chlorine attacks silver, making silver chloride.

2Ag + Cl2 → 2AgCl

4) Action of alkalies:

Silver is not attacked by any alkalies.
