Group 16 - The Oxygen Family:

The group 16 (VI A) elements are oxygen, selenium, sulphur, tellurium and polonium. The initial four elements are collectively termed as CHALCOGENS or ore forming elements, since many metal ores take place as oxides and sulphides.

1) Oxygen the most plentiful element is a significant constituent of atmosphere and ocean. It comprises 46.6% earth’s crust.

2) Sulphur is less rich and takes place in free and combined states. Sulphur is also termed as Brim stone.

3) Polonium, a radioactive element which takes place in trace amounts in uranium ores. Its name from Poland, the residence country of Marie Curie who introduced the element in 1898.
