Coil Groups

Introduction to Coil Groups

One or more than one coils connected in series are termed as a coil groups, as displayed in the diagram below. The number of coil groups is equivalent to the number of poles. In diagram there are 4 coil groups that are equivalent to four numbers of poles. The total number of coil groups relies on the number of poles and the number of phases For AC winding.

Equation 3 - ∴ The Coil groups' total number is = mP.

Equation 4 - Also, total number of coil groups or phase = Number of Coil Groups/ Number of Phases = Mp/m

Where m stands for = number of phases

P stands for = number of poles.

Illustration 1: Find the total number of coil groups for a 3 phase 6 pole machines.

Solution From equation 3.3, coil groups = mP = 3 x 6 = 18.

Pole Pitch:

It is the distance among the centres of two adjacent opposite poles. It is calculated in terms of slots.

Equation 5- One pole pitch = number of slots/ number of poles = s/p = 1800ed or 1800?

Where S stands for = number of slots

ed stands for = electrical degree

Illustration 2: compute the pole pitch for a three phase 4 pole ac machine comprising 36 stator slots.

Solution From equation 5, pole pitch = s/p = 36/4 =9
