AC Wave Winding

Introduction to AC Wave Winding:

Build up a single phase, single layer wave winding for a 4 pole, 24 slot ac machine.

Solution: Number of coils i.e. C = 12

The pole pitch = Number of slots/Number of Poles

= 24/4= 6; and slots per pole per phase, m = 6/1 = 6

Slots from 1 to 6 and 13 to 18 lie within North Pole regions N1 and N2 correspondingly. Likewise slots from 7 to 12 and 19 to 24 lie within South Pole regions S1 and S2 correspondingly. Other words, the 1st pole pair covers slots 1 to 12 and the 2nd pole pair covers slots from 13 to 24.

For full pitch winding, angle among the two sides of similar coil is 1800ed. 1800ed corresponds to 6 slots.

And for the ac wave winding, back pitch,

Yb = number of coils (or slots) per pole= 6 = front pitch, Yf.

If one side of the coil is located in slot number 1, another side of the coil should be located in slot number (1 + slots per pole = 1 + 6 =) 7. The coil's finishing end side at slot number 7 is connected to the starting end of the coil side at slot number (7 + 6 =) 13. Now another side of the coil side at slot number 13 is located at slot number (13 + 6 =) 19. Adding 6 to slot number 19 provides 25 that is slot number 1, that is, 25 - 24 = 1. But a coil side is already located at slot number 1. So add 1 and place the coil side at slot number 2. Likewise, add turn by turn back pitch and front pitch and at the end of each round add Yb + 1. The below Table provides the complete winding table for a 4 pole 24 slot ac wave wound machine.

To sketch the main winding diagram, solid lines of equivalent length and equal distance equal to number of slots is drawn. Connect the coils according to the Winding Table above.

Arbitrarily suppose a specific current direction to the coil sides within the pole pairs. For the coil sides within North Pole regions, suppose downward current direction and conversely for the South Pole regions, as displayed in the below diagram.
