Respiratory quotient:

Respiratory quotient might be described as “the ratio among the volume of carbon dioxide given out and oxygen consumed throughout respiration”. This value relies on the nature of the respiratory substrate and the rate of oxidation of it.

Respiratory quotient = volume of CO2 evolved/ volume of O2 consumed

1. Respiratory quotient of a carbohydrate:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
Glucose

Respiratory quotient of glucose= 6 moles of CO2 / 6 moles of O2 =1

2. Respiratory quotient of an organic acid:

C4H6O5 → 4CO2 + 3H2O +Energy
                               Malic acid

Respiratory quotient of Malic acid = 4 moles of CO2 / 3 moles of O2 =1.33 (more than one)

3. Respiratory quotient of fatty acid:

C16H44O2 + 11O2 → C12H22O11+4CO2+5H2O+Energy

Palmitic acid                    Sucrose

Respiratory quotient of Palmitic acid = 4 moles of CO2 / 11 moles of O2 =0.36 (less than one)

Respiratory quotient for anaerobic respiration:

Carbon dioxide is generated but oxygen is not consumed, in anaerobic respiration. Hence, the respiratory quotient in such type of case is infinity. For instance,

Respiratory quotient of glucose in anaerobic respiration = 2 moles of CO2 / 0 moles of O2 = ∞ (infinity)
