Pentose phosphate pathway:

Usually, majority of living organisms acquire energy for several biochemical activities from glucose. In aerobic organisms, it is divided in three main phases that are

1. glycolysis,
2. Krebs cycle and
3. electron transport system.

In anaerobes, glucose is partially degraded through glycolysis and fermentation. In the year 1938, Dickens located an interchange pathway for the use of glucose through the living cells. This pathway is known as pentose phosphate pathway/hexose monophosphate pathway/direct oxidation pathway. This pathway contains main phases. That are:

1. Oxidative and
2. Nonoxidative phases.

Pentose phosphate pathway occurs in the cytoplasm only.
