Lysogenic cycle

Lysogenic cycle:

The temperate phages come into a symbiotic relationship with host cells. There is no death or lysis of host cells. Once within the host cell the temperate phage nucleic acid becomes integrated with bacterial genome. Presently the integrated phage nucleic acid is termed as prophage.

The prophage behaves similar to a segment of the host chromosome and duplicates all along with it. This phenomenon is referred as lysogeny. The bacterium which carries a prophage in its genome is termed as lysogenic bacterium.

The prophage confers some new properties on the bacterium. This is termed as lysogenic or phage conversion. An illustration is toxin production by the Diptheria bacillus that is determined by the existence of prophage beta.

The removal of prophage eliminates the toxigenicity of the bacillus.
