Kuhne’s fermentation tube experiment
Kuhne’s fermentation tube contains an upright glass tube and a side tube along with a bulb. 10 % glucose solution mixed with yeast of baker is carried in the Kuhne’s tube and the tube is totally filled. After a few time, the glucose solution is fermented and produced an alcoholic smell. The level in the upright tube will fall because of the accumulation of CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas. It is since yeast consists of the enzyme zymase that converts glucose solution into alcohol and CO2. While a crystal of KOH is take place into the tube, the KOH will absorb CO2 and the level of the solution will increase in the upright tube.
