Test for identification

Test for identification:

Pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus has the capability to clot plasma with the production of coagulase. Two distinct coagulase tests can be executed: a tube test for free coagulase and a slide test for bound coagulase or clumping factor. This is the most significant test to differentiate S.aureus from another Staphylococci isolated from human sources. S.aureus is as well positive for catalase, phosphatase, and thermo-stable nucleases. It too ferments mannitol without gas production

Antibiotic sensitivity testing:

The susceptibility of the isolated strains to different antibiotics is determined by disc diffusion technique on Muller Hinton agar plates. Nosocomial infections (i.e., hospital infections) caused by methicillin resistant S.aureus (i.e., MRSA) pose a serious trouble to health care institutions.

Treatment:

Staphylococcus aureus is inherently susceptible to many antimicrobial agents. The most active agent is benzyl penicillin, though more than 90 percent of the strains found in hospitals are resistant to penicillin since they generate beta lactamase enzyme that splits the beta lactam ring in penicillin. Antibiotic resistance occurs by different mechanisms. Methicillin resistant S.aureus (i.e., MRSA) strains pose a big challenge to both therapy and infection control. Such MRSA strains are resistant to all beta lactam antibiotics and other agents. Either vancomycin or teichoplanin is the drug of option for treatment. Subsequent to an antibiotic sensitivity testing suitable drug must be utilized for treatment.
