  Transamination

Transamination:

The procedure of transfer of an amino group to an α-keto acid from an amino acid, resultant in the creation of a new amino acid and keto acid is termed as transamination. Other words, it is deamination of an amino acid, coupled along with amination of a keto acid.

Transamination is catalyzed via transaminases/aminotransferases along with pyridoxal phosphate functioning like a coenzyme. There are 2 active transaminases in tissues, catalyzing interconversions. They are as follow:

1. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST) is also termed as Glutamate
- oxalo acetate transaminase (GOT)

2. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) is also termed as Glutamate
- pyruvate transaminase (GPT)

ALT catalyses the transmission of NH2 group from glutamate to pyruvate, resultant in the creation of α -ketoglutaric acid and alanine.
