Oxidative phosphorylation:

Hydrogens or the electrons of hydrogens, pass down the electron transport chain in a series of redox reaction. The electrons entering the electron transport system comprises comparatively high energy content. When they pass next to the chain of electron acceptors, they lose much more of their energy; some of them are employed to pump the protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane. The electrons’ flow in the electron transport is generally coupled tightly to the production of ATP along with the assistance of the enzyme ATP synthetase, and it does not take place unless the phosphorylation of ADP can as well proceed. This avoids a waste of energy, since high-energy electrons do not flow unless ATP can be generated. Since the phosphorylation of ADP to form ATP is coupled along with the oxidation of electron transport components, this procedure of making ATP is considered to as oxidative phosphorylation. The electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation relies on the availability of ADP and Pi and it is considered as acceptor control of respiration.
