There are two kinds of root system as follows:

1. Tap root system
2. Adventitious root system

Tap root system:

It generates from the radicle of the embryo. The radicle grows into the primary or tap root. This generates branches termed as secondary roots. The branch to generate what are termed as tertiary roots. This might further branch to generate fine rootlets. The tap root with all its branches includes the tap root system. Tap root system is the feature of most of the dicot plants.

Adventitious root system:

Root developing from any portion of the plant other than the radicle is termed as adventitious root. It might build up from the base of the stem or nodes or internodes. The adventitious roots of a plant all along with their branches comprise the adventitious root system.

In most monocots, the primary root of the seedling is short lived and lateral roots occur from different regions of the plant body. They are thread like and are of equivalent size and length. These are collectively termed as fibrous root system. It is generally found in monocot plants such as wheat, sugarcane, and maize.
